Baby Preparation: Heelwork

Training Molly for Baby
There have many thoughts and ideas for what we might want Molly to be able to do by the time baby is here. We are very aware that when baby arrives Molly’s training will take a backseat and will likely not get attended to. So, we have been trying desperately to speed up her training. Some of the things we have been trying to nail have been:

-
Heelwork
-
Mat training
-
Not barking or rushing down the stairs when the doorbell goes
-
Taking treats from the hand more softly
-
Not jumping up
-
Recall training
-
Not pulling on the long line

The list could really go on, but these are based around what we would like her to be like with a new baby. The emphasis being on being gentle and calm, and not pulling when we are out walking.
Heelwork: This is something we have thought needs accelerated learning. Before we were able to really get into heelwork, she needed to take treats more gently from our hands. Taking treats on the go when she was grabbing treats was painful on our hands. Tom and I have agreed that each time she is on the short lead she’s going to heel and we are currently taking her out for an extra walk a day to practice this. Hopefully in the last 5 weeks of pregnancy we can get this bit of training managed.
