Car training

Having a dog we did not think that this was something that needed training. But again we were naively mistaken. As a young puppy, Molly seemed to dislike getting in the car. Upon some googling into this it seemed that she might be getting car sick. Apparently young puppies are quite prone to car sickness in the early months. For us we needed her to travel in the car to get to the nicer walks in our area. One of the ways around car sickness was for the dog to be able to see out of the windows. I didn’t want Molly trained to sit on the back or front seats of the car due to fur going everywhere. So we compromised and built her a platform to sit on in the boot.

This worked wonders as we could still put our muddy shoes and boots underneath her station. Slowly as she grew this was taken out and her car sickness stopped. She now curls up happily in the boot. We still give her a treat each time she gets in the boot to encourage her to keep liking being there.

Things look like they might change again for her in the near future, we had a practice round of putting the pram in the boot. It looks like Molly will lose some space. But looking back on this bit of her training I am so relieved we persevered with her only sitting in the boot as she would never have been able to sit next to the baby. I can imagine the temptation to lick, slober, sit on, paw the baby etc will be enormous. So having her in the boot takes the pressure off us and ensures the baby safe travel.
